Julia Wolfe is an American composer whose music has been described by the Wall Street Journal as having “long inhabited a terrain of its own, a place where classical forms are recharged by the repetitive patterns of minimalism and the driving energy of rock.” Need I say any more?! Only perhaps that she too has won a Pulitzer Prize! Her incredible work Anthracite Fields picked up the award back in 2014. A founding member of the internationally renowned contemporary ensemble Bang On a Can, Wolfe has won more awards to mention and has worked with icons such as John Cage and Colin Curry, among countless others in performance. Julia Wolfe is a serious household name and continues to create ground-breaking work.
Give yourself a very clear sense of what you’re hoping to accomplish and discuss it with your engineer(s) ahead of time. For me, that looks like setting some clear “Must-Haves” (e.g. all the bass tracks for the entire album) and then a few “Nice-to-Haves” (e.g. a random track of all of us hollering like banshees). Accomplish the “Must-Haves” first and then allow yourself to go crazy on the “Nice-to-Haves” with whatever time you have left.

We spoke to NYC bands Pinc Louds and The Living Strange about how they’re able to create some of the most exciting, innovative live music performances ever!
A great example of this technique comes from P!nk. At 2:03 in “Walk Me Home,” she sings the chorus an octave below, accompanied by nothing but an acoustic guitar, which makes the final chorus that returns later all the more impressive and memorable.

In the long run, the subtle ways you develop your brand, your image, and your story have a huge effect on the success you can achieve in your career. The way you tell your story as an artist will allow you to relate to fans on a deeper level. And on top of that, it serves as a differentiator. Undoubtedly there are a lot of musicians and bands out there who create music similar to yours, but a story or narrative allows you to go beyond the music and stand out.
It’s very fluid and overlapped as to where the bridge stops and the verses begin with these mercurial lyrics bleeding over the bars like too much bubbly poured into your champagne flute. The outro gives you a funky meter fake-out. It sounds like they went to triplets or something, but all those odd accents still subdivide over three solid bars, believe it or not.
Maybe you’re living with an illness but you still want to get out and tour so you can meet your fans. Maybe you gave up music for years and are now finally following your passion instead of working a dead-end 9-to-5. Or perhaps you came to music late and want to prove that you can still create just as well as people who have been playing for years. Whatever your struggle is, make it a part of your story and draw your fans into your world.
My intro-level music tech classes usually include a wide range of production and songwriting abilities. Some students have never used a computer for any creative purpose whatsoever, while others are already accomplished bedroom producers or DJs. I get tracks that are complete, polished works of art, and tracks that are in total shambles. So rather than try to compare these efforts to each other, I use a growth mindset.
Obviously, you always hope to just show up and the magic will take over, and before you know it, you’re going platinum. Sure, spontaneous magic can definitely happen in the recording studio — but in my experience, it’s almost always facilitated by being above-and-beyond prepared for what you’re going to do.
