We love psychologist Anders Ericsson’s concept of “deliberate practice.” It describes an approach to learning in which we focus our activities on the areas that need the most work, steadily pushing ourselves to the edge of our comfort zone (you can read more about the science behind this method here). As learners, this kind of work can be tough to do because we often don’t know what we need to do next to improve.

Apple Music for Artists allows musicians to see their stats across both Apple Music and iTunes. The platform is still in beta as of this writing, though, so unfortunately it’s not open to all artists just yet. In the meantime, you can sign up here to reserve your spot.

Secondly, it demonstrated the power of a live album to make money, and assured record producers and labels alike that consumers would be willing to buy the same songs on two different albums if one was live.

Writer’s block can be a burden on any songwriter or artist’s progress. There are no hard and fast rules to songwriting and there are certainly no surefire ways to break out of writer’s block. In the live version above, he almost looks bored while he absolutely shreds — especially in comical contrast to the insane antics of his eccentric bandmates.

Obviously, you always hope to just show up and the magic will take over, and before you know it, you’re going platinum. Sure, spontaneous magic can definitely happen in the recording studio — but in my experience, it’s almost always facilitated by being above-and-beyond prepared for what you’re going to do.

This is why we’ve set out to create an online education experience that is more personalized and focused around the student; it’s why we’re always searching for the best producers, composers, songwriters, beat makers, and music business experts to bring into our Soundfly Mentor community; and it’s why we’re constantly tracking down the most helpful resources available to help you grow and improve.

Many actors struggle to learn new music without a plunk track, or a coach to help them learn. (We have a course for that, too!) But even fewer are comfortable sight singing. Sight singing skills become especially crucial after an actor books a gig. The first two days of rehearsal are almost always devoted to sight reading through the score. If actors are uncomfortable, they can feel left behind — and worse, slow down the process.

To see many of these techniques in action, plus more, I’ve created a short vignette in Ableton Live using stock instruments and plugins. If you don’t have access to Ableton, I can recommend Helm, Synth1, and the free products from Togu Audio Line as good starting points for your synth adventures. Happy LFOing!
